Healthy Routine, Healthy Habits

“What you focus on expands so focus on things that light you up” Lisa McMurtry x

What is a healthy routine? Well basically it is you engaging in a number of activities that help you to feel good and bring focus into your life, daily.

Having a healthy daily routine is important for your physical, emotional and mental well – being, as well as helping you in your personal and professional growth goals.

A healthy daily routine helps your brain to feel good. Your brain works in a way that loves routines and patterns. It takes cues from the daily routine patterns that you have and it loves that rhythm.

Plus the brain loves having healthy habits because it wants to be efficient. Without a routine (or engaging in a routine that is not healthy for you), can find you focusing more on negative situations, experiences, thoughts and trigger mood drop, increase in fear and stress.

With routine and a positive daily routine full of positive activities, you help the brain to feel certainty and feel relaxed and in turn stress levels are decreased.

A lack of structure or a structure full of habits that do not help you physically, emotionally or mentally, the brain is more likely to focus on distractions that are unhealthy for you (sleeping in, late nights, over-eating, drinking alcohol, re-living the past or worrying about the future thoughts) and in turn increases your stress response, making it harder for you to cope with the stress you feel.

Within managing your own stress and bringing calmness into your world, it is important to learn to be intentional with your time and to have some healthy habits to engage in everyday, at around the same time, and this is where your daily healthy routine comes in.

So let’s help you, your brain, your emotions, your productivity and your sense of purpose and let’s create a daily schedule and a positive daily routine.

Take a look at my list below to inspire you to start thinking of healthy activities that you can engage in and then start to plan in your days/weeks activities to bring into your daily life to help you to feel calmer and more productive and tap into your sense of purpose.

Example ideas of healthy activities:

Waking up at the same time every day
Going to bed at the same time every day
Establishing a positive morning and bedtime routine
Meditating and practising mindfulness techniques
Eating regularly and at similar times every day, starting with breakfast
Going to work, education, or other purposeful activity
Going for a walk / exercising
Interacting with friends / family
Do something that you like to do – e.g. reading, painting, gardening, listening to music, watch funny movies
Do something that stretches your mind – personal development, expanding, learning – find books to read on subjects that fascinate you, find experts in the field and listen to their podcasts, youtube links, follow them on social media, go on their mailing list, invest in their courses.

FINAL NOTE – UNHEALTHY ACTIVITIES

All of us have a natural negative bias, meaning it is very easy for all of us to focus on the negativity in our life and of the world.

Plus it is so easy to engage in habits that actually don’t help us long term – frequently throughout the day – checking social media, complaining, watching the news, unhealthy eating habits, drinking too much alcohol.

Note that these activities ad hoc won’t necessarily affect you immediately, but engaging in these activities day in and day out is what can lead to a longer term impact on your health (physical, emotional, mental) and your stress levels.

You have to choose what you are going to focus on and then intentionally ensure you focus on the things that help you to feel good.
